I was presented to Tommy Rebel a few years back. I got to stay in The Brooklyn Basement for the first time (hopefully not the last) because he is a close friend of my home girl Maura.
First and foremost, he hates blogs. Let’s just say that it didn’t roll off the tongue as swiftly as I’d hope when it came time to ask for some pictures of what most of us would consider a gold mine or a museum of sort. *sigh of relief when he said yes*. Upon entrance, one is quickly acquainted by a hand-painted “Brooklyn Basements” type across the window of the main entry point. A star spangled banner gives us a hint of what we are to expect: a collection (understatement) of the most iconic American street fashion rarities, from Nike’s to Danner boots, and RRL to Carhartt.
Tommy Rebel isn’t the typical collector, he knows more than you would expect, in fact, a 30 minute conversation that’s mostly one-sided is worthy of a 30 day lesson. He paints the big picture in 3 words (undisclosed information), but it’s one of those “you had to be there” instances. All I can say is that a stay in the Brooklyn Basement is much more than anyone can vouch for when visiting America’s melting pot.
Thank you, Tommy for the amazing experience.

Robert Geller & Common Pojects { by AlwaysNever }
Robert Geller & Common Pojects { by AlwaysNever }

Most have seen or heard of the collaborative efforts, but this post isn’t about that, well not really… While the cross-collaboration is something to be excited about, let’s talk about this lookbook photographed and designed by Peter Poopat. What is seemingly made of an old book on cathedrals, the lookbook, consists of photographs from the collection, inserted like a scrapbook; all held together with some tape and a wide tie-ribbon. The pictures: crisp, modern and minimalist, quickly catches the eye when overlapping the aged papyrus. This is organized confusion at its best.

Young Healers is a publishing venture that focuses on emerging photographers through print zines. Fabrics : Heather
Fabrics : Heather

A year and a half ago, I would have laughed if you asked for my thoughts on heather…not the lady name, but the salt and pepper yarn that most of us associate to the sweaty, fat gym teacher in high school (with a whistle around his neck…important detail). Now, I’ve noticed that 95% of all the knits and layering pieces I’ve purchased in the passed year are in heather, all types of them, oatmeal heather, bark heather, cement heather…I can’t really put my hands on why this fascination has taken over my senses, but I can recall a specific season by Nom De Guerre, where they had 2 amazing pieces in heather: a high collar cardigan and a crewneck. I believe that was the turning point where I’ve forgotten about the vile gym teacher & strictly remember that NDG season as being one of their best.
ps: Lawrence. I’m still not sold on sweatpants, but I won’t cease to believe…
Nike Rejuven8 Lunarlite Released
Nike Rejuven8 Lunarlite Released

I had posted about these a couple of months ago, I’ve been a big fan of Lunars since it’s inception in 08. While the aesthetic features of the thick sole had to grow on me, the technological factor was impressive enough to win me over. They’ve finally released and I’ve finally gotten my hands on them. They are part of the World Cup Tier Zero collection, now Available at OFF THE HOOK.

“On the left, the white England piece was designed by James Jarvis. Keep your head up Beckham fans, and don’t worry, Wayne Rooney will handle things quite well. Believe me.
In the middle, the Black USA is is designed by Mr. Cartoon. Our fellow neighbours will have a good run, since Landon Donovan and Jozy Altidor is in great shape.
On the right, in non traditional colors, the Brazil in grey, designed by Nunca. Easier to sport. Brazil’s advantage? Their bench can win the WC, let’s not talk about their starting line up. Some dream, some have nightmares…”
Visvim Abarth & Other Spring Releases
Visvim Abarth & Other Spring Releases

Here is a better look at the Abarth Moc-Folk released by Visvim… I’m still unsure of all the other new models they have released, notably disappointed in the JCDriver silhouette, which falls in the same category of wackness as the Christo’s. But the Abarth’s are starting to grow on me, I even like the striped-detailing on the back heel.
Outerwear seems to always be the underdog in the Japanese brand’s collection, Visvim has been producing some of the best simplistic yet technical jackets on the market for quite a while now….

I found these photos I took at Reed Space from my NY trip. Thought I’d post them, not like most of you haven’t seen or been before, but I personally love seeing Shop Photos; the art of merchandising isn’t something to be overlooked. The people at Reed Space have a knack for making garments on a shelf look…better, for lack of a better description.

How To Iron A Shirt
How To Iron A Shirt

A grand sense of accomplishment is the feeling I get when my shirt goes from unpressed, to pret-a-porter. As this video clearly illustrates, 3 minutes, is the required amount of time to achieve that feeling…
Just watch and you will see what I mean, it is simply beautiful.

White Shirts
White Shirts

I’ve been seeing a lot of Herringbone weave patterns in the last couple of seasons. It’s one of those things, that make a garment just a hint more interesting, kind of like…”premium” leather on Nike’s or Elk leather on youknowwhat’s. This here is a workshirt from Engineered Garments’ Spring2010 Collection. I’ve been eager to get on my spring/summer rotation, so a white button-down and high-water chinos have been on the immediate list. I’ve never liked linen because it reminds me of corny Caribbean resorts…and that Jay-Z Hustlin’ Remix (love that track). So this 100% cotton workshirt is the way to go!
