Like life, the sunrises at a time and goes down at a time. There are tons of brands in the urban streetwear genre that have been around for years now, some are still on top while others are dying slowly. I have found a extremely young brand that is determined to stay true to its beliefs as a brand. The sun could be rising for these guys soon. the name is TaeRyan.

Well for starters, where did the TaeRyan name come from anyway?
Well this is generally always the first question we get asked. TaeRyan (pronounced Tay-Ryan) came about from a list of around 40-50 names we put together. We wanted something that would be unique and a little different, things that we hoped our brand would be known for.
How long have you guys been into the fashion business?
Growing up, we’ve always been into fashion, men’s streetwear and skate and surf clothes in particular. If you’re asking how long TaeRyan has been around, we first got together back in late 2007 to discuss how a couple of kids fresh out of college with limited resources and experience could start a clothing brand and bring something different to the industry. We launched our first designs in May ’08. We knew we were taking a huge risk by spending our own personal savings to develop a website, print shirts, etc., but it takes money to make money!

What made you come to conclusion that you guys wanted to start your own brand?
Well it all started a few years ago in the back of a Chicago library. There were a few more people involved at the time, so we decided to meet and discuss our vision for TaeRyan. After about five minutes I think it was pretty clear that we were set on launching our own brand. This was our dream and you could just see how passionate we were about this. Also, working for someone else wasn’t very appealing to us, so we figured why not be our own boss? We really wanted to push the boundaries with our designs. At the time, we felt like a lot of streetwear brands had become stagnant in what they were doing and we saw an opportunity to bring something creative and unique into the game and decided to take it.
I noticed on one of your shirts it says “Chi-York” on it, how has the two cities influenced the brand?
Our roots are in Chicago and NY and I think each t-shirt, hoodie, etc. is a reflection of that. In just about all of our designs, you can see influences drawn from the rap/hip-hop scene and surf/skate culture of both cities.
I can’t tell you how many times we’ve disagreed on a certain look or graphic. Having grown up in two different cities, we just see things differently. While we disagree a lot, it is the ability to combine our thoughts that has been instrumental in creating our designs.

I love that “Ry-boy” character that is now poping up on a lot of your shirts lately, what influenced you to create him?
Funny story involving “Ry-Boy,” what most people don’t realize is the first shirt he actually appeared on was our Fast Life Tee we launched in January 2010. It was a small part of the design and I don’t really think anyone took notice of it. A couple weeks later we create this icon for Facebook featuring “Ry-Boy” and the response we got was overwhelming. People just seemed to love the graphic. It was something our fans really connected to. We try our best to listen to the feedback we get in order to give our loyal followers what they want and with that response we decided to begin work on the initial design for what we call the “Ry-Boy Series.” The first design we did for the Special Edition Series was the Space Cadet Tee and again the response was incredible. Right now, we are working on creating the second design in the series and just having a lot of fun with it. At this point, we are really trying to make each design special, so you can expect only a couple of new designs each season and in very limited quantities.

A lot of streetwear brands are starting to look the same nowadays, what are you guys doing to keep yours away from falling under the same lines?
Everything we possibly can!! The biggest thing we do, almost to a fault is painstakingly go over every detail of a design before we decide to release it. Sometimes we spend weeks trying to perfect a design! It’s not easy and most of the time it can be very frustrating, but it is the only way we can assure perfection in our minds. It’s relatively easy for us, or any company for that matter, to throw our name on a shirt with a cool looking graphic. We try to do more than that, plain and simple. This reminds me of a quote I saw a few weeks back from hip-hop artist Talib Kweli, “An artist who has done his job well doesn’t need to sign his name.” I believe that exemplifies what we are all about and is the main reason why in some of our designs the only place you will see our name and logo is on the inside tag. A lot of companies are focused on branding, which is important, but branding should not take away from the design. We want people to focus more on the artwork and the quality of the garments.
Why did you guys choose “quality over quantity” with your brand?
It was a personal preference and when you spend as much time as we do on each design, you almost don’t have a choice. It only seems logical to limit the numbers. All of our designs are done in-house. We don’t outsource any of our designs, as many other companies do. I think that is one thing people don’t understand about the industry… Even some of the small to mid-level companies outsource designs. Choosing “quality over quantity” is probably due in part to constantly seeing people out wearing the same clothes. The last thing we want is someone taking the time to purchase our gear, go out, and see a handful of people walking down the street rocking the same tee. We want it to be as special for the person buying as it was for us designing it.
When someone buys a TaeRyan product what do you want that person to get out of it?
First and foremost, we want each person to take notice that the quality is on par with any other company out there. We want to create long lasting relationships with fans, so 3… 5…10 years from now when we are still grinding and putting out innovative designs, people can say they were down with us since 2010 when TaeRyan was just starting to emerge. We know we are going to grow and expand, but the core principles of what we built TaeRyan on will always be there.
On a lighter note, I noticed that you are avid sports fan, what are thoughts on LeBron James heading to South Beach with Wade and Bosh?
HA! Great question and yes we are avid sports fans. Maybe it’s because we are from two cities that were in the hunt, or maybe it’s because we grew up in the 90’s with MJ, but we don’t like it one bit. It’s all the things that were said leading up to this, letting everyone believe they had a chance and then that horrible TV special definitely didn’t sit well with us! But I have no anger towards Lebron, plus it looks like Wade was the mastermind of this whole plan. To each his own, they all made the decision that they thought would be best for them. I just don’t think Jordan would have called up Magic, Malone, Ewing or anyone else for that matter and asked to play with them. He had too much fun trying to beat those guys.
